I thought Episode 6 was the weakest one so far, but man, Ash Tyler and Lorca’s relationship is fascinating. The writers are definitely teasing something there, and Lorca’s apparent instability would give weight to the theory that he would do something like bring Tyler on board whilst suspecting he was a traitor.
He definitely sent the admiral to her death. I actually really enjoy his portrayal of a Starfleet captain at war. Is there a line he won’t cross?
Hasn't been a bad episode yet, IMO, though some parts are definitely weaker than others (this week...). Lorca is shaping up to be a fascinating character.
Oh, forgot there was a new episode out!
Been home sick and spent nearly all day sleeping on the couch.
Really loving the show. It wasn't what I expected but I'm so glad it certainly isn't what I feared either after those awful movies.

Agree that this was a weaker episode but there's always a great bit of dialogue or interaction just a minute or two away. The production design is excellent and the casting is pretty much perfect.
Enjoyed this episode. Completely forgot about the war until the end,
Was great listening to the Vulcans insulting Spock, and the first(?) reference to the Enterprise.

Certainly enjoyed the production quality across the board for EP1, moving on to EP2 and feel a binge watch coming on too...
I liked this ep, though I think it was weaker than last weeks. I'm not a fan of Sarek's actor.
I've got a theory - Ash Tyler being hinted as a Klingon spy is a misdirection and Lorca is actually a double agent of some sort. Like he's a secret Romulan or something
Also, Season 2.

haven't seen the new episode yet but FUCK YEAH SEASON 2!
I'm glad to know that new Star Trek isn't over before it began.

Haven't seen the episode yet, I think I was waiting for this thread to exist. lol.
But then again, my contribution always is to predict what will inevitably cause Michael to mutiny.

By LFMartins86 Go To PostMan, I really need to watch this. Only saw the first 2 episodes.
if it helps, I really thought eps 3 and 4 were really better. And I liked the first two.
I think episode 6 was my favorite episode yet simply because it was more character focused and actually made Michael likable for once. I don't watch Trek for the action. This is the good shit, when we're just developing the characters.
That Enterprise namedrop was fun, though. Discovery may be the hottest experimental shit but the Enterprise is still the posterboy.
The complication they added to Spock's starfleet choice is actually...pretty good! It's not something that needed explaining but now that they did, it fits really well. Still not a fan of the guy playing Sarek, though.
Our boy Ash fights like a klingon. They said the thing. And still no Voq appearance. The wild speculation is becoming less wild as time goes on.
Was Stamets high? He was a lot of fun in his brief appearance but viewing the character as a whole his performances vary wildly episode to episode. It's really strange. And like, is he just into needle play now? They used the DASH drive in this episode and the dude looked spunky as hell immediately after. The last creature almost died, and his first try left him reeling on the ground. Something aint right.
Next week's episode looks pretty cool. I'm surprised that I'm so happy to see Mudd back so soon.

So don't lie to me:
Did the show get any better after the first 2 episodes, because I walked away thinking The Orville was more Star Trek than ST:D.

By Script Kiddies LLC Go To PostSo don't lie to me:It does. Everyone almost unanimously views the first 2 episodes as a drawn-out prologue and that the show doesn't actually get started until episode 3.

However it starts kind of dark and depressing so you're not going to get that TNG feeling right away. A few episodes later we're starting to get some blips on the radar, hints at what we expect and finally some character development as opposed to character establishment.
I'm still not totally sold but I get closer each episode that goes by. It's still early days.
I'm not gonna read the other posts in here until I catch up (only seen the pilot so far), but it was enjoyable enough to keep my interest. Just waiting for my wife to finish up a couple shows so that we can watch it together.
Happy to hear about it getting renewed for a second season, though!

Would this be a good entry point for someone who's never watched Star Trek outside of the modern movies? I was thinking of starting either this or TNG but I have little to no knowledge of the series.

Why not flip flop and do an episode of both each week?

I've never watched any ST series except maybe a couple of episodes. It's perfectly fine.
Actually, can't believe some of you thought this was a weak episode - I vastly preferred it to last week's. That one felt... dunno, too nasty and edgy and grimdark for its own sake. The ending with Stamets was creepy though.
This one? So good. Loved Sarek and Michael's interactions, loved how close Michael and Tilly are getting, how the crew sees Lorca vs how he sees himself vs how Starfleet sees him. Also, Stamets was cool. Creepy-cool, considering last week, but still. Like.. sorta high on some unidentified shit, lol
Oh, and are we still speculating on Ash being Voq? 'Cause it feels like they're hinting in that direction so it's like... it really is, or they're just dangling some big ol' red herrings right in front of us to see if we take the bait.
All in all, I'm totally on board (heh) with this series so far, and I'm really glad it got renewed.
I also thought the 6th episode was probably the weakest, but I thought the idea of extremist Vulcans was neat and not something we see too often. Pretty weird to see Stamets acting all loopy, I hope he gets his grumpy self back soon.
By FatRiker Go To PostAlso, Season 2.Fuuuuuuck yayuhhhh

Why not flip flop and do an episode of both each week?Good idea. I might start up Discovery this weekend, then. I've absorbed a decent amount of series knowledge through osmosis and always wanted to dive in at some point.
Liked this episode quite a bit, I find Sarek an interesting character. Neat little idea that he shares parts of both Picard's and Michael's Katra inside him.
By FatRiker Go To PostAlso, Season 2.Excellent!
Still need to watch last night's ep thanks to the TWD stuff being so unusually long last night.
Woot! Season 2! And I loved the character interactions in this episode (6) more than any other, although I'm not sure how I feel about Lorca seemingly sending the admiral to her capture (death?) was it intentional, did he hope that would happen? And I was intrigued by the extremist Vulcans. At first I thought it would be totally contrary to Trek spirit, but it actually makes sense. Vulcans believe suicide is morally acceptable anyway, and I've always thought a lot of Vulcans would still have qualms about working together with humans.
Overall, I think the episode did the series a lot of good. We say new technology, we saw Vulcan and Vulcans in everyday life, they moved on for the moment from the whole spore-drive thing and the war got interesting for a change.

Are they using Stamets to fly the ship? That wasn’t really touched upon in this episode. Only hinted.
I think that was the implication, yeah.
To both the Lorca thing (@Joeytj) and the Stamets one (@Meus)

I'm liking this so far but I'm also getting a bit restless with the overarching plot. It's very bare bones atm.
By Meus Renaissance Go To PostIs there any reason why Spock can't make an appearance in Discovery? They could literally get Zachary Quinto.
I don't like how Discovery has a holodeck already. It could have been a shitty SD CRT holodeck versus TNG's 4k holodeck, but that still doesn't work for me.
By FatRiker Go To PostThey could literally get Zachary Quinto.Yeah, the holodeck was disappointing. Another unnecessary almost-retcon. I think it was supposed to be very limited. compared to the TNG era ones, but still, I don't get why they do stuff like that. It isn't really even that visually impressive if that's what they are going for. It's been done before.

Isn't there apparently a licensing issue between CBS and Paramount that splits the television stuff from the filmverse?
I was watching the TNG finale special with Jonathan Frakes hosting, and one thing he said caught me off-guard. Referring to the placard on the Enterprise bridge, he pointed to the phrase, "To boldly go where no one has gone before" as an attempt to be politically correct.
It kinda irked me to hear him be so dismissive.

Like, he didn't think it was that important to change the "no man" to "no one"? Weird, I mean, the change from using "man" as a representation of both genders to just "one" or something else, started decades ago and wasn't that controversial. It just makes sense, especially as Trek was preparing to introduce more female captains and main characters.
The last episode was really good despite how terrible the app and connection were. A lot of people online seemed to be getting disrupted too because of these errors so I am probably going to watch it again. It took us forty minutes to watch the first twenty lmao. Loved all the scenes with Michael and Sarek.
I'll echo the notion that this was one of the weaker episodes so far, but I'm enjoying the series overall. I feel like they glossed over Stamets and his personality shift a bit too much though; I'm unsure if that was hinting at something, or if it was just meant to be a little humour moment. We'll see as things go further though. And it was nice to see some more backstory and character moments for Michael like helping out Tilly. She's feeling a lot more three-dimensional now.
I'm really enjoying Discovery and its crew, including Saru. I'm not fond of Tilly and her needy pathology, but if we can deal with Lt. Barkley, we'll find a spot for Tilly eventually.
I'll say none of the Discovery cast is fully annoying like Neelix or are complete nothingburgers like Travis Mayweather. Tilly is around the point where Ezri Dax used to be before she got that cool ass gun in 'Field Of Fire'.
Tilly is cool. Fucking awesome indeed.
Bit annoying he shot every Klingon then missed for plot reasons, too obvious.

I hope Sarek's failings dont affect Micheal too much I kind of like how she is trying to be Vulcan as much as possible.
Tilly is going to get killed. I get the sense she is purely a character arc for Michael, who will face another personal loss before the Season ends.
So I finished up DS9 and fucking loved it. I didn't care for TNG when I tried it, but I liked the OG. Is it worth giving TNG a try? Or move on to the other two?

Or move on to the other two?TNG is awesome, it's my favorite Star Trek show actually. The first season is weak, the second gets better but starting with season 3 it becomes phenomenal, so many great and memorable episodes, seasons 3–5 are probably one of the best and most consistent sci fi I've seen. Seasons 6 and 7 run out of steam a bit but are still good and the series finale is so good, the final scene especially.
