So, as of writing this post, Wolfenstein 2 has an OpenCritic average of 88, and Assassin's Creed Origins has an average of 84. Under normal circumstances, both would definitely be in the conversation for some Game of the Year gongs at the end of the year.

2017 is not normal circumstances. We've had Nioh, Persona 5, Hellblade, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier Automata, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, PUBG, XCOM 2, Sonic Mania, Resident Evil 7, Total War Warhammer 2, Pyre, two Yakuza games, and both a new mainline Zelda and a new mainline Mario. I'm sure I'm missing a tonne of fantastic games from this list, too. It's ridiculous.

It's been a very long time since we've had a year with a lineup of games this strong. (Best year since 2007, perhaps even better?)
