Its surprising how much they are willing to back a deal that is going to be killed off immediately in parliament
This hits so hard.
Why, then, were there no photographs of Margaret Thatcher and Helmut Kohl holding hands at the Brandenburg Gate to match the pictures of Kohl and François Mitterrand at Verdun in 1984? Because Thatcher literally carried in her handbag maps showing German expansion under the Nazis. This was a mental cartography that English conservatism could not transcend – the map of a Europe that may no longer exist in reality, but within which its imagination remains imprisoned. “Europe,” Barnett writes, “moved on from the second world war and Britain didn’t.” One might go so far as to say that England never got over winning the war.
I mean, Germany are the stronghold of EU and it has its issues but going back to WW2 rhetoric and ideas?

The UK government has inflicted “great misery” on its people with “punitive, mean-spirited, and often callous” austerity policies driven by a political desire to undertake social re-engineering rather than economic necessity, the United Nationspoverty envoy has found.
Philip Alston, the UN’s rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, ended a two-week fact-finding mission to the UK with a stinging declaration that despite being the world’s fifth largest economy, levels of child poverty are “not just a disgrace, but a social calamity and an economic disaster”.
About 14 million people, a fifth of the population, live in poverty, and 1.5 million are destitute, unable to afford basic essentials, he said, citing figures from the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. He highlighted predictions that child poverty could rise by 7% between 2015 and 2022, possibly up to a rate of 40%.
“It is patently unjust and contrary to British values that so many people are living in poverty,” he said, adding that compassion had been abandoned during almost a decade of austerity policies that had been so profound that key elements of the post-war social contract, devised by William Beveridge more than 70 years ago, had been swept away.

By Laboured Go To Post*PRETTY GOOD COUNTRY KLAXON*Having nothing to do at work, I decided to check out the full report, seeing as it is only 24 pages.
The headline figures on poverty are a sleight of hand. The report does not use traditional measures of poverty such as "less than $1 per day" , and on these traditional measures the UK performs adequately, equivalent to any other advanced Western society. They don't even use the fairly stringent measures of relevant poverty as established by the Child Protection act of 2010, and instead use a brand new measure created by the Social Metrics commission this year. I took a look at their report, and it certainly seems to be a very well defined and valid measure, but to present fairly shocking figures of 14 million in poverty or similar and not specify that they are using a brand new metric, which cannot be compared to other countries, is very disappointing.
The problems of universal credit highlighted in the report are massive and ridiculous, but I don't think the sleight of hand is necessary to present the wide ranging issues of universal credit.
Also the focus by the Guardian on austerity as a whole seems misguided; the report itself is almost entirely shitting on Universal Credit, and mostly brings up austerity as an issue since measures that might have helped the disastrous rollout of UC have been stripped back. Not that anyone really needed reminding that journalists are incompetent, however.
The sinking ship has a new captain
Stephen Barclay has been confirmed as the new Brexit Secretary as Theresa May seeks to fill posts in her cabinet.
The MP for North East Cambridgeshire and Leave supporter had been serving as a minister at the department for health and social care.
He replaces Dominic Raab, who resigned on Thursday over Mrs May's withdrawal agreement for Brexit.
A spokesman for No 10 said Mr Barclay will continue preparations for a deal or no deal in his new role.

We joke but how many of our own congressmen and women make legislation and probably can't even fill out a fucking simple submissions form.

Kemp cheated his way to victory something serious. It was some oldschool voter suppression. Abrams should have bodied him. Alas, it's not a bug, it's a feature.

If that really is one of drivers then I ain't even that mad.
https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-california-wildfires/index.html
After touring some of the fire damage in Northern California, President Donald Trump was asked whether seeing the devastation changed his opinion on climate change.🤦
“No, no I have a strong opinion. I want a great climate. We’re going to have that, and we are going to have that are very safe because we can’t go through this. Every year we go through this. We’re going to have safe forests and that’s happening as we speak,” he told reporters during a briefing at a command center in Chico, California.
Earlier at the center he was asked about the role of climate change in the recent California fires. He said, “Well I think we have a lot of factors. We have the management factor that I know Jerry has really been up on and very well and Gavin is going to -- were going to be looking at that together.”

because of course. "I don't feel like working (even thought I already don't) so lets have another government shutdown or let me threaten it one more time"
dude hasn't even been in office two years and this is what, the fifth time he's calling for a shutdown?

So the vote is tomorrow right? To pass the brexit bill, viva and others have spoken to don't think it will pass and what happens next is anyone's guess. Buckle up for one hell of a week.
When your base is so far into trumpism that the whole party shits on Navy Seals
Note: it’s been called confirmed McCraven was on Trumps short list and not on Clinton’s VP list
How did the "working class" people of any country get tricked into viewing themselves as anything besides slaves? Were they too busy making families instead of bolstering their position as middle class so that they'd one day wake up and realize that they too can one day have employees?
Don't you know, Smoke Dogg? Rich people have all the answers. That's why they're rich. And unlike virtually all wealthy people for all of human history, who were assholes, today's rich are benevolent and only want the best for us.
