US Soccer president is basically warning that they could lose their bid to host the 2026 World Cup because of the orange idiot. I imagine he has to be in the know. Of course FIFA is not a symbol of ethics or morality but there has been an emphasis on cleaning their image. Saying no to a US World Cup when the world's outlook of the US is at an all time low would give them credibility of some sort. Then again they are still holding a World Cup in Russia and Qatar so it's empty "credibility."

Democrats are ending the shutdown after three days over the promise of a DACA vote that won't ever happen because McConnell and Ryan don't give a damn about rules and norms anymore.

Our 72 hour stand in solidarity.
Chuck is Lucy
Dems are Charlie Brown
DACA is the football
Politically speaking, Dems don't have any leverage here. It was either caving now or caving two weeks from now.

I think this is a pretty cowardly way of handling this IMO, but there is some strategy at play here. When we're back in the same place again in a couple months Mitch can't say he didn't promise to bring up immigration separately.
Are you laughing as loudly as I am?
By HasphatsAnts Go To PostPolitically speaking, Dems don't have any leverage here. The president is historically unpopular.
Dems are fucking marks and cowards if they take this deal.
By KingGondo Go To PostDems are fucking marks and cowards if they take this deal.
Nah ... just stupid. They're never going to play the GOP for being the dishonest shit stains they are. The GOP would be quite happy to kick this can all the way past the midterms if they could.

Man I’m supposed to have vacation on Feb 11. They should have just stuck to their guns, DACA is dead and I’m about to lose my vacation for nothing.
By HasphatsAnts Go To PostWe didn't have CHIP a week ago. Now we do. It's not nothing.
True. The deal is somewhere in the middle. I just think it highlights democrats stupidity in believing the GOP will follow through with anything they say they will. Do you trust McConnell to deal with DACA by the next spending negotiation?
DACA will never make it to the floor. The Republicans can't even get agreement on it amongst themselves.
Clean CHIP funding is actually a win after the Republicans tried to kneecap it and tie it to other things for weeks.
I just have zero expectations for Republicans to debate and negotiate a dreamer act in any kind of good faith. White nationalists like Miller and John Kelly will keep interfering and insisting on a huge ballooning in ICE, a border wall, etc.

By HasphatsAnts Go To PostWe didn't have CHIP a week ago. Now we do. It's not nothing. The right approach is to (correctly) point out that Republicans are holding a gun to the head of Dreamers and CHIP recipients and saying "pick one."
Republicans are in control of the government and Trump is hated by most of the country. They'll take the blame. Not to mention the immediate peril this places Dreamers in from an administration that licks its chops at deporting longtime residents, even those brought here as children. It's morally *and* politically correct to shut down the government over this.
But no, let's take the word of MITCH FUCKING MCCONNELL that he'll act in good faith out of respect for the prestige and norms of the senate. Jesus Christ this pisses me off.
Not to mention that Republicans paid no political price for the 2013 shutdown, so even if Dems are concerned about 2018 it's probably misplaced fear. Way to energize the base you shitstains.
Nobody is gonna pay any political price for this shutdown, either. It's a whole lotta nothing and at best it was terrible political posturing on both sides.
By reilo Go To PostDACA will never make it to the floor. The Republicans can't even get agreement on it amongst themselves.
I think it's more the WH house and it's admin at this point than senate GOP. Reports are that Trump doesn't really know what he wants on immigration legislation. Probably because the eGOP is in contrast to his Nazi aids.

We did that. We don't have the benefit of Russian bots and trolls to push our narrative though.
kicking the can for 3 more weeks is stupid because we know what the fuck the GOP does EVERY damn time... media obviously doesn't give a shit when GOP members lie constantly so i have no clue why they agreed to this. no fucking way does mitch mcconnell act in good faith. the only good faith he will act upon is the good faith to lie to the democrats AGAIN

Polling indicated that Republicans were taking the blame for the shutdown, and that CHIP and DACA are popular. Not to mention that they're morally the right thing to stand up for. Dems have fucking *nothing* to gain from caving for the promise of a DACA vote. It's pathetic.

They did this for
A. CHIP
B. (foolishly) Hope to shift leverage since McConnell has made some "promise"
It's just a short term CR so Gonzo is going way overboard ... but I don't think this provides them with leverage in the future. I'm curious about internal polling on this. Seems like a lot of dems from purple states got to make their vote. Maybe they saw something that lead them to believe this was a losing battle?
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostNo biggie. This issue isn't done yet.Circumstances conspired to create maximum leverage for Dems and they pissed it away for a promise from Mitch McConnell. They have no guts and will cave next time too.
By KingGondo Go To PostSo now we're blaming Russia for why the Democrats are terrible at getting their message out?
No? But we did on multiple occasions point out the dichotomy the GOP put us in. Liberal pundits did too.
I mean go to twitter. Look up any CNN story and a bot will be spamming #schumershutdown no matter how distant the topic.
/shrug ...
Glad CHIP is funded, but no way does Mitch McConnell keep his "promise." I wonder what will happen in three weeks when this come to a head again.
By reilo Go To PostGondo, you're ridiculous lolPutting faith in Dems is like hoping for bad sports ownership to get their shit together. Recipe for constant disappointment.
Please tell me what in their history should give me faith that Democrats will stand strong and come through for DACA recipients.

The amount of Americans legit willing to die on that hill aren't as high as you think lol. Right now the dems are in a perfect position for mid terms...actively being the cause for government being shut down for unprecedented amounts of time is the kind of hail mary that the GOP could be hoping for to change the tide. So Chuck gets Mitch on record now while the public is actually paying attention for once, and all he and the dems can do is keep bluffing until it's too late. That's the gameplan. Actually legit letting government get furloughed for months over this? There's no chance. Because the GOP would be nonplussed. They'd be running ads non stop hoping it has an effect on mid terms, which it eventually actually might if it goes on long enough. Meanwhile Trumps base would secretly love it and be energized by it.

This was a strategy vote. Get CHIP funded and put McConnell on the record for a DACA bill vote. Allow moderate dems the ability to vote to close debate and allow future nominees the ability to stand strong.
It's sounds OK, but we shall see what they do in a couple weeks when Turtle hasn't kept his promise and we're back here ...

You let them own that position, and then win mid-terms. It's pretty simple.
Actually playing poker against this insane administration is just too much of a wildcard, and it's morally ambiguous when the currency is American workers not being able to feed their families. A long term shutdown just doesn't make sense, no matter how much we'd all like to support the Dreamers.
