Reviews
70/100 - EGM (Ray Carsillo)
Helldivers’ metagame campaign and variety of gameplay are more than enough to keep you entertained, but only players with a tight-knit group of co-op buddies will be able to get the most from the experience.
80/100 - Gamespot (Cameron Woolsey)
Helldivers is a hugely entertaining space romp, despite bearing a few battle scars. It is truly a game designed for precious water cooler moments, when you can tell stories of fights barely won, and anecdotes detailing white-knuckle flights from insatiable hordes. The deafening cheers heard through my microphone as the last living member of the team squashed a bug tank with three reinforcement pods, turning the tide back toward victory, is forever etched in my mind. Imperfect as it may be, Helldivers' focus on the cooperation of a small team looking out for each other against oppressive waves of enemies elevates it from what would have been a fun and challenging shooter, to a game that now sits at the top of my list of how I plan to spend many future evenings: with a gun in hand, my allies at my back, and a broad smile on my face.
85/100 - GameInformer (Jeff Marchiafava)
Even after the unlocks dry up, the challenge and camaraderie that Helldivers offers makes it hard not to attempt "just one more mission" with your friends, a proposition made all the more enticing by the inclusion of four-player couch co-op. I still don't know how the community-driven galactic campaign will shake out over the coming weeks, but contributing to the larger war effort is just one more welcome excuse to enlist.
90/100 - Destructoid (Conrad Zimmerman)
Unrelenting and brutal, Helldivers delivers fast-paced combat, epic standoffs and a comical approach to death. Its enemies are varied, powerful and a constant threat to the players. While the full impact of the larger multiplayer experience remains to be seen, it still adds a nice little scratch to the progress itch. The strategem system provides great flexibility in squad building with many ways to build out team roles to maximize defensive and offensive capabilities. With procedural map generation and just enough mission and enemy variety to prevent a sense of repetition, the twelve levels of difficulty ought to keep players challenged for a good long time.
90/100 - IGN (Vince Ingenito)
It isn’t the prettiest game you can play on PS4, PS3 or Vita, but Helldivers is one of the most exhilarating, and you’ll get all three versions for the price of one. It pits you against seemingly impossible odds, arms you with a powerful, diverse toolset, and empowers you and a group of people to put the pieces together - and they all fit together beautifully.
95/100 - Jimquisition (Jim Sterling)
With its sledgehammer humor and clever blend of stealth and action, Helldivers is a lot smarter than a passing glance might have you believe. It’s a game in which life is cheap but the deaths aren’t, where carelessness gets you turned into kibble, and sustained battle will leave you with an empty gun and a horde of pissed off monsters. The life of a Helldiver is nasty, brutish, and short… but it’s a heck of a lot of fun, it’s hard not to laugh even when you’re getting torn to shreds, and that final shuttle flight makes all the horrors worthwhile.
This is what freedom tastes like.
I wouldn't believe it happened if I wasn't there.
You not getting off that easy next time it happens Rio
Real talk tho, this game is a fantastic team based game. If they keep supporting it, I'll stick with it for the duration. I highly recommend this game to everyone. And so far Retro, Moris and myself been holding it down. More soldiers would be awesome.
Taking out enemy patrols as they come to you is also integral, especially at later levels.
My favorite gun is the justice. Unfortunately you get that late (around 18/19). But the Breaker is a solid early gun.
Starting to level my offensive stratagems, seems necessary for harder levels.
Was busy last night so I missed the end of the Bug planet invasion. But I imagine it was nowhere close to clearing.
Best decision i have take recently. Me and my friend are having a blast with it.
Planning out your drop zone, what defensive/offensive/supply stratagems you need for particular missions, coordinating supply drops etc really highlights how "every man for themselves" Destiny was.
Wouldn't be mad if Destiny ripped off the stratgems mechanic wholesale.
The unlocks and leveling offer some sense of progress, without ever feeling like a grind. You know exactly when and what you're getting, and whatever you're working towards is always within a few missions reach. I'd play with Moris and Rio and think of what we could have used in our last session, then after maybe an hour or so of solo play I have that thing ready for our next set of games.
And then outside of unlocking the strategems offer a good level of customization and class/role play without forcing you to commit to that role for 20+ hours to flesh it out. It also allows you to coordinate on the fly with randoms, which is why I don't think random matchmaking is that bad. You can adapt your playstyle to your squad and the mission each time you head out.
Honestly I can't think of anything bad to say about the game. My only complaint would be how the game let Rio drive into a minefield like Suge Knight does his friends, but I think the game being so punishing and having friendly fire on just adds to the replay value. Missions, despite having repetitive objectives, still feel so fresh after all this time because shit can go south in an instant. You guys can have the perfect plan on paper then you get going and a random drops on your tank as soon as he joins and alerts 4 enemy patrols. Then you have to deal with that and it's the best.
It's just the best co-op game you can buy on PS4 right now. For online or for same room or any combination of both game covers everything.
By Retrok i'm already on stillBy Prototype Viktorlet me know when you guys start up
I'm getting on right now.
skippin Bloodborne so hard b/c I know for a fact i wouldn't get far in the game that and MLB is almost here
Unless there are other people who want to play I think I'll take a break from it until you guys come back to it too. Got a headache trying to play with randoms the other night.
Bloodborne just ruining everything! Was so close to max level
Cyborg invasion was going on when I played yesterday. Might be over now though
Cyborg homeworld was on a snow planet so I'm like.....I'll let yall handle this one.
Ok I got this game and I am a fiending it, I got to like level 8 in solo play and this shit convinced me to get a plus subscription to keep leveling.
Also the Cyborg planet is snow but its not that bad.... there are no giant holes to fall down.
I'm convinced the cyborg planet on Hell Dive is impossible without the perfect composition of people.
I found one group of randoms and we got every objective completed flawlessly. Then one guy dropped and another guy came in and every thing went to shit.
Never found a group like that again. So I said fuck it lol
By Moris Go To Post We only do higher difficulty runs now, cyborg Helldives or Impossible missions are hard af.
Nah I'm good right now I can't even imagine cyborg home planet on hell dive since the home planet seems to be a level higher than listed. I'm doing very challenging & hard levels which isn't so bad as long as your packing some decoys and land mines. I'm finding myself taking on more defensive strategems since everyone else seems to think their Arnold from commander or in exo squad when choosing strategems.
