Basically it's Blizzard's answer to the Moba game. What makes it different is that they've removed a lot of the "busy work" aspects of the genre allowing players to just focus on objectives and team fights. So if you've ever wanted to get into these games, but were intimidated by the sheer volume of information you gotta digest to play it, maybe this one is for you.

Just the sizes of the heroes compared to the map makes it look shite to me

They've managed to take ez mode DotA, AKA League of Legends and make it even easier by hiding players of low skill behind map-based objectives rather than hero or item-based objectives.
Instead of "Wow, they picked a [carry], we need to gank them often so they don' get big!" its more like "We need to create a diversion on this side of the map in case the objective activates on the other side of the map and we can take it, ez."
There is almost nothing to gain from fighting with your heroes besides time to conquer the map objectives. A fight ending in a teamwhipe loses you a round while in DotA, a teamwhipe could lose the entire match.
Gonna hop on this next week. I really want a league alternative and since I can't think of any other big titles to throw money at this year I may as well ride with this for a while.
I'm playing but man... I just really, really need to drop my LoL mannerisms. I want kills so bad and these tanks are TERRIBLE tanks

I've hovered over the shortcut in steam but realised that i'd rather not get locked into a 30 minute plus game with mommy-boy whiners crying to report me over my item choices :'()
