3.7 to 60, 11.9 at 120 in the quarter mile on a naturally aspirated 414HP flat 6 with a manual transmission. That's just bonkers to me. It's gotta be what, 3 tenths quicker with a PDK?

Hopefully I can afford something like that one day. Though with electric vehicles well on their way, maybe that day won't come.

Don't mind me, just posting some pics of my car since the thread has been quiet lol.
Need to give it a proper wash and detail... maybe even some minor paint correction coz it's practically under the sun 365 days now. π
I've been watching a lot of Ammo NYC as well as other detailing YT channels to see if I can do it myself. I think I can, but I dunno if I want to invest in the equipment as well as the time I'd need to get it done. π¬
Also, I spent a day with that Mazdaspeed3 in the background. And it's a lovely car but goddamn is it totally unforgiving... I felt like I was a noob again at driving a stick coz it has that typical 1-2-3 Mazda shifter where if you fuck up, you definitely will notice lol. I really liked the classic turbo setup where it punches you once you get in boost, something you'll rarely encounter in the GTI coz it almost feels NA. What I didn't like was the interior(my GTI is only 3 years older than this but the MS3 feels 10-15 years older than that) and the aforementioned unforgiving driving qualities. That all said, I think it's quite liveable actually... if you don't mind the gas mileage lol.

The Mazdaspeed clutch is not for the faint of heart. It very much has a harsh catch and you can't modulate nor feather it.

Yuuup.
In comparison, FoST's and Scooby WRX/STI's had a heavy af clutch but at least you could play with it. And IMO the GTI and NC Miata have a similar feel where it's quite light, the only difference is that the GTI is a lot more vague than the Miata.
The MS3 is pretty much an on/off switch lol.
I try to give the outside of my car a proper wash every 2-3 weeks. Usually takes about 45 minutes to take everything out, wash, dry, and put up. I use Adam's Car Shampoo, a lamb's wool mitt, and some microfiber drying cloths. Also use the two-bucket method with some grit guards.
I hate cleaning the wheels, though. I usually grab some old rag or other soft cleaning thing for them and just try to focus on not cutting myself.
I need to get some touch-up work done in several spots. Just some very small and minor paint chips. Also need to get the car waxed again.

These draconian regulations passed to coerce automakers into going electric will put a limit on relative power per liter of displacement, meaning an engine's horsepower output will legally and directly depend on its displacement. Carmakers allocated a considerable amount of time, money, and energy into pursuing the exact opposite (making big power from a small engine) in the 2010s, hence why the base 911 gets a turbocharged, 3.0-liter flat-six.wait what
"I expect 20 percent more displacement on average for these EU7-capable engines. Many manufacturers will jump from four to six, or from six to eight [cylinders]," Walliser predicted during the same interview. "The regulations are completely counterproductive to CO2 regulations, so this will go up," he added.
Upsizing will trap carmakers into an expensive pickle. Bigger engines inevitably burn more gas and emit more CO2, yet they'll need to comply with ever-stricter emissions regulations. This leaves engineering departments with two options: compromise power, or invest in more advanced anti-pollution technology. Porsche is taking the second route. Walliser said making engines compliant will require catalytic converters that are three to four times bigger than today's, resulting in a "small chemical industrial factory" on board to keep emissions in check. In turn, this will increase the cost of developing and manufacturing a car, and consumers will pay the difference.
Someone explain this to me
Wait, what are these regulations? They are limiting how much power an engine can produce based off its displacement? That is fucking stupid.
Ahh, I found an article that kind of explains some things (but not all; it is also from 2016): https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-paris-engines-exclusive/exclusive-carmakers-forced-back-to-bigger-engines-in-new-emissions-era-idUSKBN12E11K
This (much more recent) article also touches on it: https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1128190_new-emissions-regulations-will-lead-to-bigger-engines-says-porsche-911-chief
Seems like it is because the EU regulatory body can't figure out a way to test turbo-charged engines for real-world emissions so they are limiting the power-per-liter as a heavy-handed hack.
[...]
Carmakers that have spent a decade shrinking engine capacities to meet emissions goals are now being forced into a costly U-turn, industry sources said, as more realistic on-the-road testing exposes deep flaws in their smallest motors.
[...]
These mini-motors sailed through official lab tests conducted - until now - on rollers at unrealistically moderate temperatures and speeds. Carmakers, regulators and green groups knew that real-world CO2 and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were much higher, but the discrepancy remained unresolved.
All that is about to change. Starting next year, new models will be subjected to realistic on-the-road testing for NOx, with all cars required to comply by 2019. Fuel consumption and CO2 will follow two years later under a new global test standard.
Independent testing in the wake of VWβs exposure last year as a U.S. diesel emissions cheat has shed more light on the scale of the problem facing automakers.
Carmakersβ smallest European engines, when driven at higher loads than current tests allow, far exceed legal emissions levels. Heat from the souped-up turbos generates diesel NOx up to 15 times over the limit; gasoline equivalents lose fuel-efficiency and spew fine particles and carbon monoxide.
[...]
This (much more recent) article also touches on it: https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1128190_new-emissions-regulations-will-lead-to-bigger-engines-says-porsche-911-chief
[...]
According to Walliser, the new rules will put limits on relative power per liter of displacement, which will block automakers from introducing tiny, turbocharged engines with high outputs that often generate much more emissions in real-world driving than they do in the lab. The aim is to more closely align the real-world and lab results.

Europe ruining shit for the rest of the world again? Hopefully this just pertains to them and doesn't affect us.
It can't be this difficult to measure and rate emissions.
But on the plus side...BIGGER ENGINES!

The dirty truth of turbocharged engines was always that they are less efficient than N/A engines under load. It's just an inefficient system all together. Mild-hybrid or hybridization in general seems the way to go: small batteries to stack power.

I can burn an eighth tank doing 20km fucking around going to and from work. (2019 Audi A3)
If I still lived in the country, the turbo would have been perfectly fine (30-32 MPG) because there are rarely any stops. Out here in the suburbs, though... 16-22 MPG is typically what I get unless I hop on the tollroads for a while (where it jumps back up to around 30).
That's my experience as well.
My 25-ish mile commute to work on highways gets me around 30 MPGs and I lose about 25-30 miles according to the range calculator.
But the moment I go to Target that's like 3 miles away at most, the range calculator shows a drop of 10 miles... and that's only going one way while driving conservatively. Give it the beans and it drops 15.
Tho tbf, Audi, VW, and maybe Porsche's calculations are probably bunk. Like for the current GTIs... with a full tank the car tells you your range is around 375-425 miles, but once you've logged 250 miles(according to the odometer) the range shows you have about 50-75 miles left in the tank. So what's apparently happening is that the computer takes into account the entire tank(including the reserve) when you get a full tank, but as soon as you start driving, the computer readjusts itself and does not account for the 2 gallons left in the reserve. So the car will turn on the low fuel light at 35 miles range, but in reality you still have 2 gallons of gas left in the tank(50 miles more or less). Apparently this was the way VW decided to idiot proof the GTI and maybe their current crop of cars lol.

By No Love Go To PostPicking up an E46 M3 on Sunday. Wish me luck, brothers. π
E46 M3 pickup went well. Been driving it every day since I got it, about to do a ton of maintenance/refreshes this week including:
Koni Yellows + Eibach Pro Kit
Euro catless headers
Full Supersprint exhaust (all 3 sections)
Z3 steering rack
CSF radiator
Upgraded fuel pump + injectors + E85 tune
Sunroof delete panel + nonsunroof headliner install
Volks RE30 wheels
Lightweight battery
Should pick up 60 whp and be 190-200 lbs lighter after all of that. Then I'll start taking it to the local tracks here in SoCal.
I've also reinforced the rear subframe and rebuilt the VANOS. The motor runs buttery smooth and lots of power/responsiveness. Definitely one of the best cars I've ever driven.
Also picking up an E60 M5 6 speed manual in a couple days as a daily driver. Will post pics and videos of both soonish.
Still have my fully modded E92 335i but need to put a new motor in it. Once I part that out and sell that, I'll either add an E90 M3 slicktop to the fleet or maybe pick up something cool like a 911 Turbo because I always need a boosted car in my life.
Thanks for reading my huge update, I can see you guys have been having fun.
Don't tempt me pls lol.
One of my coworkers is selling his E63 M6 at a really good price and I'm kinda interested lol.
But with the way things are right now, I feel like I should try to buy a house instead lmao.

By AlphaSnacks Go To PostDang, good to see you around.
E60 M5 is the best M5, imo.
It might well be but I think I know in my heart, no matter what, the E39 M5 will always be the best. Everything about it is perfect: motor, driving feel, interior, features, comfort and the way it looks is the most perfect of all. I don't think I can ever get over the E39.
The E60 used to be my most hated BMW (still kinda is other than those early-mid 2000's 7 series) but I'm coming around to it.

I wouldn't recommend it simply because SMG III is garbage, and you'll probably need to do the rod bearings etc immediately. The M6 is awesome though, it's ugly as hell but weighs 245 lbs less than the M5!!
Drove around aimlessly for an hour and a half today because I was getting so stressed out from work that I couldn't focus. Felt so much better. Just cruising with windows rolled down and music blasting.

i do this every day. Grab a coffee from the costa drive through in my local town, 5 minutes later i'm on 60mph country roads. Tempted to go now.
The country roads back at my place in Louisiana is what I miss most since moving to Texas. Long, windy roads with shifting speed limits due to those curves, no stop signs, no traffic lights, little other traffic, very scenic. It was so nice. Much harder to find fun roads out here in northern Dallas.
By Kibner Go To PostMuch harder to find fun roads out here in northern Dallas.
Northern Dallas is as straight as an arrow both literally and figuratively. π
Come to the south instead.
That's one of my favorite routes that's super close to my house.
Crossing Mountain Creek Lake is nice and not many people really take it these days so if you've got balls of steel and the water around you doesn't scare you, you know what to do lol. From there, it's a nice steep af hill going up to the DFW National Cemetery and DBU's decent looking campus next to you. 408 is just meh even if it's going downhill, not a lot of cops tho since it's kinda the border of Grand Prairie and Dallas. The stretch of Camp Wisdom in between Belt Line and Clark is fucking fun, especially at night since it's pretty dark out there and it's going downhill with some curves. Camp Wisdom between Belt Line and Lake Ridge is one of my favorite spots to test out the suspension... it's narrow, the road kinda sucks, it has a blind corner or two and harrowingly fast if no one's in front of you. Lake Ridge going up to Mansfield Rd/Belt Line is just scenic but gets fun once you reach Mansfield Rd since it's another uphill climb but flattens out once you hit Belt Line. Say hi to all the TV broadcast antennas and weather radars next to you lol. 67 down to Lake Ridge is nothing special and Lake Ridge heading back down to Mansfield Rd/Lake Ridge is the same. You'll then hang a left to get back to Lake Ridge to go the other way, then take a left at England... this one is just scenic with a bunch of super nice houses... the stuff you see up north. Once you hit 360, you can take the toll or service roads... service roads obviously have traffic lights but it's got a high speed limit so you can think of it as multiple drag strips if you like. The toll road on the other hand is where the action happens these days... bunch of hooligans have been doing speed runs on that road so if you're into that, you know the drill lol. After that, it's pretty much home bound.
If you're looking for long windy roads tho, take a look at southwest Fort Worth... Cleburne -> Glen Rose -> Granbury -> Cresson has a tooooon of that. In fact, that where the DFW Miata club usually does their drives. And once you get to Cresson, don't forget to stop at the Motorsport Ranch. While you can't get on the track for obvious reasons lol, it's still a nice place to wind down... especially if there's some cars on the track.
Also since you're local now, you should hit up the Maverick PCA. They, along with the Lone Star BMWCCA, are the most active car clubs around.

Wow, a Z redesign.
D:
The new Acura TLX Type-S looks beautiful. Could be the best looking in the segment. Should boast nearly 400HP from its 3.0L TT V6. Really looking forward to that engine.
Also, surprised to see that the Z was revealed in a teaser so randomly today. It looks interesting. I do know for a fact that it is riding on the 370Z chassis (you can also see that the windshield roofline has literally not changed). The front is supposed to look like the 240Z. The rear is supposed to look like the 240Z and 300ZX mixed together. You can see the taillights every so slightly from the profile.
Overall, I think it also has a lot of F-Type cues, which is no surprise, because the original 240Z was designed and inspired by the E-Type. The VR30 is an amazing motor, and its 400HP crosses well into the 500s with barely $2000. With the right weight (I'm assuming it'll lose a pound or two, but it'll obviously be a few hundred lighter than the Q60) and the right mods, this thing is going to give high-end supercars nightmares.

TLX Type-S looks great to me too, and it's nice to see a proper, (hopefully) competitive sports sedan that will actually retain its value for a change. The TCO on those should be typical Honda which is awesome. Although it's typical nose heavy FWD if it drives like the old TL but with AWD it'll be pretty damn great.

AMG killed the V8 on the E-Class AMG:
To set the record straight, the new 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe and cabriolet does not have a V-8, will not get a V-8, and their place in the AMG performance realm goes no higher than a Mercedes-AMG E 53. And that is on purpose, executives said today in a roundtable discussion following the global virtual unveil of the updated cars.
We will see the higher-performance Mercedes-AMG E 63 sedan and wagon later this year.

I watch this popular Portland-based car guy that builds a bunch of cars and posts them on YouTube. Alpha has even met him before in Florida. He was converting a '15 Mustang to look like Eleanor from Gone in Sixty Seconds, and Disney took the car from him because they own the rights and trademark to the look and feel of the Mustang.
He wasn't even done with the build so the car wasn't fully finished to even look like the car.
By diehard Go To PostI understand the name part of it but going as far as taking the car? super lame.Probably that or be destroyed in legal fees from a protracted case.
IIRC he was mentioning Eleanor during those videos... I imagine Disney took the car from him for damages or something along those lines.
Tbh this is kind of a catch-22 lol.
The 996's are thought to be shit coz of the fried egg headlights(the IMS issues too) so they're probably the cheapest 911's right now but they're also predicted to stay cheap in the future coz no one really likes them. If you find one where the IMS bearings are fixed(or were never a problem to begin with) and you're okay with the look, then it's probably a great buy. But if you use it to springboard for future 911's, the market says you'll be fairly disappointed.
The 997's on the other hand mostly fixed the IMS issues and styling but they're not that cheap yet. From everything I've read and chats with Porsche peeps, the 997 is definitely the best buy if you're looking for a great car and have plans to upgrade. But the 996's are drastically cheaper than 997s(we're looking at a minimum of $15k difference lol) so it's like difficult I guess?
I need to talk to the guy when he comes in to pick up his GT4... dunno when we're getting it tho coz ports just barely opened up and all we've been getting are Macan's and Cayenne's. π¬
