I wanted to go and see Shang Chi but last minute decided to go see Dune again. Daddy Villneuve please be proud of me 🙏😭
Candyman has to be one of the most visually amazing horror movies ever made. Most of the shots are so well done.
Candyman is also one of the most disappointing movies I've seen recently.
I don't think the story works at all. The ending is so rushed, it feels like they packed 20 minutes of the movie and reduced to 4 or 5 minutes.
And the final scene is so ridiculous that it's almost comical.
The horror genre is a perfect way to do social commentary but it works because the film makers are interested in doing an horror movie first and then subtlety pointing the audience to a certain social problem.
Candyman is a subtle as a 18 wheeler crashing into a scooter but that isn't the main problem.
The movie acknowledges that it wants to be as much in your face as possible but the whole thing feels so disconnected.
I don't know, I feel so bummed after watching this. I really wanted to like it, it has something to say that is important but I think it completely fails at doing that.
Edit : there's no way that it's a coincidence that the owner of the art exhibition and the second one to be killed is named Clive, right?

Exactly the reason I didn't bother to watch it in cinema. Not that it would be easy, since I don't have one in town currently.
I really hate it, when directors don't have any form of balance with that. The in your face commentary is only done well when it's a sprinkled with comedy.

It touches on some important matters as gentrification and police brutality.
Those are important messages to get through mainstream audiences but I just don't think it's transmitted the right way.
I really wanted to like the movie, it's not a shameless crash grab, it's really trying to say something real and important.
It just doesn't work for me. It's a complicated movie to review as I amI far away from the target audience.
I'm not American, I am not black and some things don't hit me personally.
As I said, the movie has some very important things to say but sometimes it doesn't say it well.
There's a few things I "liked", for example the fact that the Candyman become the different people that the white people fear for stupid reasons. It's an hard movie to review, technically is almost perfect, it has a lot of say and the message is important but it just doesn't do it for me.
By inky Go To PostI saw WWZ today for the first time (don't ask me why).I've only seen it around the time it was released but I didn't think it was awful.
Let's all forget that just happened.
I would love to see the original third act though, it was supposed to have Brad Pitt's character crash land on Moscow and a huge battle against the zombies would happen but they changed to that ending in a lab.
I don't think a bigger action set piece would make it better or worse tbh. It has very little going for it as is.
By Fenderputty Go To PostMajor league is a top 3 all time baseball movie.
quite possibly the best sports movie ever made.
I liked the final set piece of WWZ more than I did anything else in the movie

Really good film available on All 4 (UK) called Help starring Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham
Would recommend if you want some escapism.
Sarah, a young care home nurse, works in a Liverpool care home, Bright Sky Homes, as the COVID-19 pandemic begins ravaging the country. The film follows her struggles as she tries to look after Tony, a man with early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

I'd be shocked if they greenlit the second film.

Malignant is awesome. Total camp. James Wan knows what he's doing. All of the actors are onboard with the absurdity. Loved it.

Candyman was so boring, so worried about looking pretty without ever being scary. Huge disappointment for me.
Then I popped Malignant, and was surprised at the confusion around this movie, on whether or not the humor was on purpose. The movie tells you straight away what it is, it’s a super villain movie set in the horror genre. It’s a comic book. Too bad it didn’t make it any better, and once the action kicked off it went from bad to worse.

Yeah, thought it was great. In the hands of lesser filmmakers, it’s dull, cliched trash. But the man knows his fucking way around a camera. Loved the use of primary colour, the skill of its horror/action sequences, the campness of it all. Really good fun.
Just came back from seeing Dune in IMAX.
What a treat, perfect movie for it.
Villeneuve did not disappoint.
