By Smokey Go To PostThe fact that the 8700k is only 6c/12t, something I've been on for years, is somewhat pushing me to the x299/i9 range tbh. If I'm going to upgrade if at least like to go up in core count vs making a lateral move but onto a newer platform than what I'm on.Just wanna chime in on this, my old workstations running an i7 3970X, the one I recently bought is running a 8700K, switching off gpu assist on rendering, the 8700K is notably more potent for many things over the 3970X, even though the core counts the same.
Got a dead 3970X and 4960X sat on my shelf too (different 3970X), my poor old workstation got tortured.

I've heard this before. With the usual improvements that come with tech over that period of time and the move to DDR4 for example, it shouldn't be too surprising.
It's just a *thing* on my part regarding core count.
By Smokey Go To PostThanks!I get you, I'm still looking at i9's for when I build my actual updated work rig, but it's certainly a better CPU than my old 3970X (which cost me over $700 back in 2011 ish)

By Laboured Go To PostIs this something you'd recommend for most users? If the purpose is gaming then it's a very nice CPU, I didn't specifically pick it, it just happened to be the cpu in a shockingly cheap complete build i picked up, but it quite happily runs pretty much anything i've thrown at it, and performs well in more workstation-y jobs like rendering and such, but as far as recommending it, it depends really on what it'll be used for, a higher core count would of course be nicer for heavy lifting.
Still a great CPU by all accounts.
I can pay £600 for a Vive or as low as £300 for a Windows mixed reality headset.
The Vive has better tracking and better controllers, but are they double the price better?

By Kibner Go To PostI haven't messed with any of the VR shit, so I can't say.
Me either, but there's been some VR only games lately that look really good to me. Mainly GornVR.

I hate looking for something that apparently doesn't exist and I don't know the reason why. In this case, it is a a wireless USB hub transmitter that connects to a USB receiver. The reason I want this is to convert wired USB devices to wireless so that the wires reach across my couch instead of across a large portion of the living room.

Get a Vive or Rift used. You can easily get someone to sell you one on a huge loss, and its likely going to be in good condition. I'd never pay anything over 400 for any current gen headsets at MSRP, because gen 2 sets could be announced at any moment. At the same time, you want something that's at a minimum Vive or Rift quality if you're planning on using this for PC, otherwise you might as well just go PS VR.

All the tracking is done through the headset itself, so no need for sensors, but they can go a bit wonky if the controllers stay outside of the camera FoV for an extended period.
Resolution/refresh rate from what I've read is the same or higher resolution across the board with WMR sets. I think Samsung do one that's same resolution as the Vive Pro.
I bought the Samsung Odyssey and returned it and own a Vive. In my opinion, the biggest difference between the two is hand tracking. The vive has pretty much perfect hand tracking to interact with the gaming world. The Samsung Odyssey just had too many hand tracking dead zones in my experience (head tracking was solid). Something like looking up at a menu with your hands down to your sides, trying to use the controllers to navigate was very inaccurate. Playing a bow and arrow game (The Lab), the tracking would mess up when bringing your hands close and under your chin.
As for the screens between the two, honestly the resolution increase in the Samsung is nice but was partly negated by the dimmer displays versus the vive.
The build quality is miles apart. The vive feels like a commercial grade piece of equipment. The Odyssey felt like a toy.
Steam VR on the MR displays is still in beta so not every game works perfectly or at all. Some (LA Noire) require a hack to run.
So to sum it up, The Vive just works better to fully interact with the vr world. I was fully prepared to sell my vive and keep the Odyssey but the trusty old reliable will be staying after all.

Second hand Vive it is.
By DominicanPower Go To PostSo you need the CUE software to be running in order for you get the rgb lighting effects?
You can set static lighting and save it, then close CUE. For dynamic lighting effects, it needs to be left running.

you can create your own color combos and patterns, what i showed were some of the defaults in the software. all the peripherals are linked together in the software.

I got tired of seeing my GPU at 80c while playing so I got creative with the Cougar case.
Ripped the legs off an old case, stuck them to the right side of the QBX with electrical tape and laid it down horizontally. Looks ugly af from the left side (what was the bottom), but I'm happy with the results.
GPU down from 80c to 70c. Can run the fans quieter, so less noise.
Took the logo and sticker off. Gonna work something out for the left side to make it look more presentable without sacrificing airflow.
Excuse the dust, pls. I cleaned afterwards, I promise.

What kind of cooler does that GPU have?
By diehard Go To Postwait why did laying down your case drop your gpu temps, is (was) the intake on the bottom? The intake was at the bottom, but the case feet are also quite poorly designed. Restricts airflow to pretty much just one side.

By HottestVapes Go To PostI'm still mad jealous of that keyboard, Kib.Hopefully the non-LED version later this year is affordable.
Got some thicker case feet ordered. 17mm thick to replace the stock ones. Hopefully it'll be high enough up and give enough clearance to have my PC sat vertically again. Also got some new dust filters, since the case only comes with one one and it isn't very good.
By Kibner Go To PostI guess since other people are showing some pics, I should, too. My setup in gaming mode:What kind of switches?
My father has been complaining about his shitty comp lately (think he's on my trusty old Q6600 ... still going strong after 10 years), so I might surprise my folks with a new PC. They use is for the most basic things you can think of, so anything relatively modern will do.
I've been thinking Ryzen 5 APU on a cheap B350 board. Stick an m.2 SSD on there, 8-16gb ram, modest PSU and call it a day.
What do you guys think would be the best / cheapest, performance-per-euro way to go about it?

I think the lower end of the line is good bang for the buck and it will take up so much less space for them.

By Kibner Go To PostCheck into one of the Intel nuc's. I think the lower end of the line is good bang for the buck and it will take up so much less space for them.It could work, but I always wanted to build a micro-ATX / mini-ITX system. And while I doubt I'll upgrading the PC down the line, I'd still like to have the option of putting a higher-end Ryzen CPU and a graphics card in there. You never know.
Space is not an issue and I don't mind spending a couple hundred € more on it, so I don't think I'll be going the NUC route.
EDIT: The NUC that's comparable CPU-wise to the 2400G, the Skull Canyon, is ~450-500€ over here and it's a bare bones system. With RAM and storage that's at least a 700-750€ purchase. I'm pretty sure I can build a 2400G based PC with better components for less.
Gotcha. Just figured I would throw out an alternative for consideration.
E: for others that want to check a nuc out, I think this is the only official distributor of custom configured, pre-built, nuc systems: https://www.simplynuc.com/

Ryzen ITX is a pretty fun build to fuck around with. Enjoyed mine, despite being eternally unhappy with it.
Could go with something cheap and cheerful, Thermaltake Core V1 is a really cheap ITX case that'll keep the dust out and allow for a regular ATX PSU. B350 ITX ASRock motherboard will probably be your best bet for price/layout. I've got the Asus B350i, which is fantastic, but there's no need to spend 150 quid on a motherboard for a budget APU board. Plus it doesn't have any display outs.

HTC Vive dropped to £499 today. Temptations rising. Hopefully the eBay prices drop within the week. £300-400 for one and I'm in for it.
