Real talk, console manufacturers focusing on powerful hardware is pointless. People that actually care about the hardware have PCs, the people that actually buy the consoles just want an affordable box to sit under their tele to play the latest games.
Then there’s also the vocal minority on forums and message board that just quote PR sound bites in favour of whatever console their parents bought them
Going balls deep on hardware just increases the price for those end consumers. If history tells us anything it’s that the most successful consoles are also the most affordable consoles.

as long as it has Prime and Netflix i'm happy lol. Can't smash over a game of Uncharted.
By sy X Go To PostPC is always limited by console hardware though since that's the baseline for most games.
Somewhat true for the most part, but that's besides the point since you can push the hardware in different ways on PC (higher resolution/higher frame rates). I'm just pointing out that Joe Bloggs' as a potential PS5 customer doesn't give a shit if it's 10TF or 15TF as long as it plays the newest games.
The people that get their dick hard over hardware (Hi, that's me), they've got PCs that they're happy to throw money at for diminishing returns.

Gamers don't care about price, at least not at the numbers you likely mean.
If the ps5 launches at 599 its still gonna make 80 million sales lifetime by end of gen

I'm sure it would once they cut the price after a year of two and elongate the generation to 7~ years, but it sure as fuck wouldn't break records at that price.
So long as 60fps is the baseline for all games, I don't care for super grafix.
Leave that shit to the grafix card fetishists

Who wants to tell him.
60fps is the baseline for some of us. But for you console bois?
I still love the dichotomy that 60fps isn't somehow graphics. Like massively increased image stability, animation smoothness, temporal resolution and double the basic fucking visual information isn't graphics.
What I mean is that console gamers think you play screenshots. That's how smart they are.

A low bar when it comes to Gamers.
Was flicking through a stack of old games and came across the Orange Box. Then remembered we're never going to see Half Life 3.
Has there ever been a reason given, or at least postulated for what happened at Valve? Steam such a success that they don't have to bother anymore?

Why make a single player Half Life 3 for slim margins when you can laugh all the way to the bank with a bunch of shitty multiplayer games?

valve dont want hl3 to be just another game, they waitin on vr improvements to take us to the next level. it is almost time.

like that has prevented game companies from making a sequel before. i imagine a few of them would easily be convinced with a nice cheque anyway.

I can see that becoming more common, but there’ll always be games without the option that put graphical fidelity over playability and force a locked 30fps (or worse, as the gen progresses).

The most important thing about next gen consoles is for developers to have a better baseline for graphics and performance for the next several years. It will be good for everyone.
Also ray tracing for consoles is coming. Devs have talked that it's possible. You can't give me that shit about ray tracing needs 44 tflops for it when we are not about bruteforcing ray tracing but because we are looking at better ray tracing rendering algorithms.
Hell, this might mean your thousand dollar GPU could get 4k60fps in the next few years with ray tracing settings set at max.

"bruteforcing" ray tracing isn't a thing. Either the rays are traced or they aren't, outside of de-noising techniques. The only way i can see that term being applied is if it is all done through the SM with no dedicated ASIC's to help calculate the ray intersections.. but that's all on the hardware side.

BOTW 2, when?
Sorry but HottestVapes is right, the most important thing for consoles is price, a fact Nintendo understands comically well.
Why talk about a graphics baseline when it's pretty unprecedented that a console above $399 has ever been market leader.
Let's talk about price maxline.

specs are important for the enthusiast crowd, and they're a key component of marketing, so ms got the right idea having an expensive console for them, and a cheap console for normal people who don't care that much

There's going to be a bill of materials and we'll see who's willing to take the bigger loss.

It's a win-win for me. I'm not obligated to have a preference for either company. I just do so when one is clearly better than the other, and we know who that is currently (One X).
