The pitching might have been holding Ohtani back.

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostThe pitching might have been holding Ohtani back.I thought this would be a down year for him, but it would be crazy if he manages to get a fourth consecutive ~ 9 WAR season as a pure DH. The only players to ever achieve 8.8+ bWAR in four straight seasons: Al Spalding (1872-76), Tommy Bond (1875-79), Kid Nichols (1890-93), Honus Wagner (1905-09), Christy Matthewson (1907-10), Ty Cobb (1909-12), Walter Johnson (1910-16), Eddie Collins (1912-15), Grover Alexander (1914-17), Willie Mays (1962-66) and Barry Bonds (2001-04). So basically a few deadball era pre integration guys and the other two GOAT candidates. His last three seasons have been 8.9+ bWAR (including 9.9 last year when he missed the last month of the season), and he already has 2.4 this year after 36 games, a 10.8 bWAR pace.

I would normally caveat this with "but he probably won't keep this pace up" but (1) it's Ohtani, (2) the run environment is apparently down so his extra power is probably more advantageous this year, (3) he can regress some and still get to 8.8 bWAR (the list wouldn't change much if I switched to 8.7 or 8.9, I only used 8.8 to get rid of Mickey Mantle who doesn't deserve to be in Mays / Bonds talks). Most likely he'll still end up falling short and finishing somewhere around 8 WAR even with a fantastic rest of the season, but it would still be amazing if it happened. Would make his theoretical best single season bWAR 15.0 (6.2 pitching, 8.8 batting) which would be the highest since Walter "Big Train" Johnson who hit 16.5 in 1913 (there have been only four seasons of 15+ bWAR since 1884, the year overhand pitching was first introduced, and that's the only one since 1900).

He is insane.
He just carries himself with an incredible presence this season.

My favourite player on my Korean baseball player has returned from a hamstring injury, that he picked up a few days before the season, a few weeks ago and was having a shit time. Was batting less than .100. Seems to have found his swing this week. So far hitting .411 with three homers.
Pretty much game over for the league if he is back to his best.
Missed a large portion of the season last year because of injury, but would of had a WAR of 11 if he played a full 144 game season.
Scary that he has 12 homers while being pretty shit.
Would love to see him and Ohtani stay healthy and hot for a season. Take a run at 73.
Talking of Ohtani, happy Ohtani Day to residents of LA.

Yeah, Judge had a horrendous March-April but if you look at May and stats overall from the outside looking in it's like "dude was having a down year? Fuck! Let me go shit myself in a nuclear bunker if that's what 'bad' is."

Hmmmmm
Fletcher, who was Ohtani's teammate from 2018 to 2023 and has been described as one of his closest friends in baseball, placed bets with the bookmaking operation of Mathew Bowyer, according to the sources. Ohtani's former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, also bet with Bowyer and eventually stole nearly $17 million from the Japanese superstar to feed his addiction, according to prosecutors.
