Are you getting rid of the Miata?
I found myself this past weekend browsing Craigslist for some NA/NBs thanks to my tax returns and by god it is goddamn tempting... but I probably would only drive it twice a week so I’m staying away lol.
Maybe I’ll just be a responsible adult and put that into a Roth IRA or APR stage 1?

So my local Audi dealer said they can get me R8 RWS allocation at MSRP. May build, August delivery. I specced it pretty basic to maximize value. White with red stripe and 20" forged wheels in black. No premium package or carbon fiber bits. $144k.
Worthy upgrade from GT4 or do I spend $50k more and get a used 458?
I love Ferrari, but damn that Audi seems attractive at its price point, especially considering its brand new with 4 years of warranty.

Ferrari.
I actually really like the new R8 too. But it's a Ferrari. If the 50k is no big deal to you. Both are phenomenal options, obv.

By shinshoryuken Go To PostWhats the purpose of the car? Daily driver or weekend car?A little bit of both. I have a Lexus SUV and the MX-5 that I am a primary driver for (my wife has her own car) and I really just drive whatever suits my mood most on that day unless the weather is just terrible. Since I am replacing the MX-5 and I love sports cars it has to scratch that itch but I also want it to be a little more refined and luxurious, especially in terms of noise levels and stereo performance. And I definitely agree about the color combo. It's going to be my fun car so I can afford to be a bit choosy in terms of colors and options.
For me exterior/interior color is very important. Never compromise. You will be the one looking at it everyday.
By reilo Go To PostHrmm, I'd also look into how you are adjusting your seats. I have problems with my psoas where my lower back will hurt including my entire hip area after even an hour of driving, especially my left side because of the constant clutch engagement.I have actually done some seat adjusting recently but there's a limit to how far I can adjust the seats in the MX-5 and still be comfortable with my feet on the pedals and have smooth clutch operation. I have long legs so I need to be able to push the seat back but then that restricts how far I can recline the seat-back cushion and also makes the steering wheel a little too far away (no forward/aft adjustment to the wheel in those cars). I'm making the best of it for now but most likely will be selling it within the year.
I fixed it by making sure my seating position was more horizontal rather than perpendicular. We as humans are meant to be bipedal vertical beings, not be sitting down at a 90 degree angle. So the closer you can comfortably get above that 90 degree angle while sitting during driving, the better. It will alleviate a lot of the tension.
I'd also look into talking to a PT of how to fix that by strengthening the surrounding muscles, but that's another topic.
By jongkookie Go To PostAre you getting rid of the Miata?Yeah, the MX-5 is going away. Fantastic car and worth every word of praise that's ever been written about it. I could write a love letter to the designers but, as I mentioned above, I need something that fits my needs a little better and would like a little more refinement. Also, if you don't have a retirement account, definitely do that. Paying yourself now means having more fun and security later!

Was looking at getting a new car. The S3 in particular but it was like KYD $60k so about USD $71.5k so I backed off. Import duties on cars are rough here in the Cayman Islands😐
Will probably just wait till next year and grab a A250 or the New Golf.

+1 On the exhaust vid lol.
Also, I think Ford might take those plans back... I filled up at Costco earlier and 93 was 2.79 here in oil country meanwhile regular gas stations already hit $3 a gallon for 93 and it looks like gas prices will keep climbing even after refineries finish the switch to their summer blends.
Yeah I hear ya. It was tough letting mine go and I miss it everytime I see any Miata on the road but it really is more of a toy than a daily driver. I'm definitely gonna be back in one in a few years as long as I can't afford a Porsche lol.
And yep, I'm definitely putting some of that money in a retirement account. Maybe it's coz I'm getting older but I'm definitely thinking more about the future instead of the now and it kinda feels weird tbh haha.
Yeah. My brother's Mazdaspeed3 is stage 2 right now thanks to Cobb and the Accessport so I've heard a lot of good things and it seems like Cobb just recently got in the MK7's so there's a lot of options. Another good thing is that Cobb sorta has a local presence here in Dallas... their shop is like 15 mins away from my office lol.
But before any power gain though, I've already decided I gotta upgrade the clutch first so I might stay stock for a little longer.

Not a Ferrari guy, not even a little bit. I think the way they run their company and treat their customers is pretty wack. I also think the R8 RWS is a pretty special car so that would be my pick among the two.
Do you not get special pricing/allocation from Porsche? Cause, GT3 seems like it'd be the way to go.

Last year 93 was under $2... 👀👀👀
Funny enough I wouldn’t mind paying for that I think... ever since I got back from SoCal a few weeks ago I’ve been wanting to move there lol.
The cheap gas is cool and all but almost all the roads here in Texas are flat af so 93 is basically useless.

$50k is definitely a big deal to me or we wouldn't be having this discussion. I do prescribe to the notion that more expensive is usually better, but just like anything else, you have to set soft and hard budgets lest you get carried away. Otherwise, I'd be driving a Performante right now. :D

If I get a 458, its gotta be a coupe. I prefer the looks, especially that clear engine bay.

I'm not a fan of Ferrari as a company, but their cars really appeal to me. The R8 RWS is just such a good value in my mind. Its priced like a Carrera GTS, but has much more exotic looks and powertrain. And I don't have to worry about warranty, running costs, putting on miles or having slightly outdated tech like 458.
By zfzmikey Go To PostDo you not get special pricing/allocation from Porsche? Cause, GT3 seems like it'd be the way to go.
6 speed manual GT3 was definitely my first choice.
However, Porsche employee lease program only works on "normal" models up to GTS trim. So no Turbo or GT cars unfortunately. Hell, I couldn't even get a .2 GT3 at MSRP because of how high demand for that car is. Customers get priority on allocation.
+1 for the Audi too.
Ferrari's are nice and I'm always never gonna hate them but I feel like you're just trying to keep up with the Joneses with a modern Ferrari. I'd rather get something unique.
And yes I totally get the irony of wanting to be unique considering I drive a GTI lol.
Lmao. I do have preliminary plans to move down there towards the end of the year(as soon as I find a gig of course) but yeah. I'm sort of hoping to be outside of DTLA tho... I don't think my left leg can handle the traffic surrounding that area and I'll be damned if I have to switch to a DSG lol.
That's pretty much why Texas(sans Austin) has a huge community of muscle cars... those cars are basically perfect for the straight roads over here.

By reilo Go To PostAlright BMW, you have my mfing attention:
This thing looks great
What is this?
Next generation BMW 8-Series Coupe. I think it's an M850i to be exact. There will also be a M8 variant.
So yesterday I decided to use the superleggera for my commute. It was gut wrenching, bay area traffic is no joke. Also, I've driven my old Gallardo through traffic before and it was a pain, but the superleggera took that to another level. I felt every nook and cranny of the road, every bump my body absorb. I had to be mentally prepare if I ever going to make a uturn cause of the rediculous turn radius.
The super low hide height made me felt invisible but the stare of the people reminded me that I wasn't. Oh the stare I was getting, some very positive but half gave me a dirty look, thinking I was some spoiled kid or some asian pop star. I was in traffic anxious, and mind wondering as a sit there, the carbon fiber err..thang interior was actually very reflective so I was getting sun on my eyes and the smell of alcantara isn't quite as nice as leather.
I was constantly checking the oil pressure gauges, wondering around the interior, looking at the fire extinguisher behind the passenger seat,..thinking to myself and hoping my car won't set itself on fire. Some of the things that cross my mind was if I should have gotten a NSX or slightly newer lambo...or I should have taken my trusty commuter beast mode Honda fit.
As a passing through a tunnel at 20 mph and a missed opportunity, the traffic finally lighten up and I was exiting to a nice 2 lane back road and I was finally able to open her up. Each lil wide gap I had was a slight bliss. Rolled the window down and the sound after 4k rpm was intoxicating, but kinda felt bad for the bikers on the road who got scared. The car really felt raw and it becomes an extension of you. The drama and the emotions it gives reminded my of my all time favorite car...integra type R.
After awhile traffic started again and a sigh of relief finally near home. I made it home! After that crazy commute!
BUT once I was parked, I took a glance at it, and the only thing on my mind was I want to drive again....
Oh yeah I think I made the right decision....
TL;dr: it's awesome.

Just got back from a couple of test drives and though I would put down some thoughts while they are still fresh. I drove this:
and this:
The F-Type was completely planned. The LC500 was more spur of the moment since I spotted it sitting on the Lexus lot down the street from the Jag dealership. And wouldn't you know it, these two cars have a lot more in common than you might think and more in common than either of them with my MX-5.
First the Jag. It surprised me with how refined and well-behaved it was. Once you get past the sound of the thing, the actual ride and the amount of wind and road noise are both much, much better than the MX-5. The MX-5 is a pretty raw car and you can pretty much feel every bump in the road and the ride is very wiggly on the stock springs and of course there's a ton of wind and road noise. Not so in the Jag. It felt very civil (and extremely powerful) in comparison. And it was an F-Type convertible. Supposedly the coupe has even less wind noise and feels even stiffer in the turns. I need to find an R coupe now for comparison!
I also liked the interior more than I thought I would. The seats were great (which is a big relief!) and had tons of adjustment and the steering wheel had enough telescoping movement that I could put my seat back and stretch my legs out while still having the wheel at the right distance. I loved the side cushion adjustment and I was able to get really comfortable pretty quickly. The interior as a whole is driver focused (which is a plus - it reminded me of a grown-up Miata in that respect) and was nice enough but not over luxurious. The one downside to the whole experience was that the test drive route was pretty short and only had one interesting curvy bit where I could really push the car. The salesperson was extremely nice and let me lap that section several times but I will really need more seat time in the F-Type in order to really get an accurate sense of it.
Now the LC500. It also surprised me in terms of how well it drove, how good it sounded and how extremely gorgeous the interior is in person. Have you ever wanted an Aston Martin but were worried about the upkeep and reliability? Well, here's your car! The LC500 will make you feel like a million bucks for far, far less. It, like the F-Type, felt smaller on the road than you would think given the weight and dimensions. It was easy to drive and easy to place and the powertrain was responsive, free revving and sounded like V8 heaven. I giggled every time I downshifted with the paddles and, to the salespersons credit, I got a much longer and much better test drive in the LC500 than I did in the F-Type and even got to drive it on the interstate at high speeds. It's quiet (as long as you aren't stomping on it or kicking down gears for no good reason other than it sounds epic) and honestly, at about the same price used as the F-Type, feels like more car for the money.
It has the far nicer interior, the far better sound system and feels more solidly built while also having that legendary Lexus reliability behind it. If it sounds like I am a little bit smitten with it I totally am. Lexus has built a killer GT car and they deserve huge props for doing so.
Random final thoughts: Even with my love of the Lexus I still think I lean towards the F-Type as long as subsequent test drives continue to impress. It just seems more "me" and that might be down to the character and the looks of it. I really like the clean lines and the overall look of the Jag.
1) The Jag had much better brakes. Short travel, epic stopping power. I've never been in a Lexus that impressed me with its braking. The brake pedal travel is a bit long in the LC and gives you nothing for the first small portion.
2) The engine and transmission in the LC are sublime. Smooth in auto and quick and punchy in manual mode. And the way it revs! It felt like it revved faster and more freely than the engine in the F-Type.
3) No beating the torque in the F-Type though. Supercharger takes it. And after driving these two cars I think it is going to be really hard to go with a turbo-charged car. Even a good turbo car isn't going to be as responsive as these two.
4) Audi TTRS/RS3 and AMG C63 still to come and I am very curious as to how they will compare.

By matmanx1 Go To PostJust got back from a couple of test drives and though I would put down some thoughts while they are still fresh. I drove this:
and this:
The C63 drives a bit...big. You'll see what I mean. It doesn't wrap itself around you like the F-Type. The TT-RS drives like a go-kart, but it may not feel DD livable in some cases. The F-Type and LC hit the sweetspot, but the LC powertrain will be outdated very shortly as a 500HP TT motor will be getting dropped in next year, replacing the old 5.0 (which even the LS no longer uses). The LC is a great looking car, but imo, let down by an anemic motor down on torque. It feels like it revs faster because it has 10-speeds, instead of 8. So it's constantly revving and changing gears. It's a good 10-12MPH slower in the 1/4, which is huge. Once it goes forced induction though? It'll be a different story, Lexus won't just have a gem on their hands, it'll be a diamond.
That said, F-Types, and really ANY Jag with the Supercharged 5.0 are an addiction. I warn you now. I've sampled it in an XJ and it was just as great. The next time you drive that F-Type will feel the same as the first time. My car still makes me laugh and shout: "Arggghhh, I'm so angry! I should've been a lion or an eagle!" Although it was Clarkson talking about an AMG. Hahaha.

If I was able I wouldn't/couldn't give two fucks about anybody's thoughts . I'm driving one of the best sports cars out. Simple.
One cool thing about the R8 is that I could do European Delivery, which would be a pretty awesome bucket list experience.
But that 458 still pulls at my heart strings no matter how I try to justify it... Finding the right car is gonna be a bitch though. Searching the whole country for right spec, history, pricing, etc.

The F-Type may indeed end up being the sweet spot of all the cars I am testing in terms of looks, handling, power and features. It was surprisingly comfortable and the ride quality was MUCH better than my MX-5 despite the 20" wheels and being in Sport / Dynamic mode for most of the test drive. That part actually surprised me as I was expecting it to be a bit hard and rough around the edges but it really isn't. It is a true GT car that has polished some of those rough edges that I am used to while still being exciting to drive.
Hahaha.
The ride quality in the TT-RS will be one of the things I will look very closely at. I think I might be getting a little bit tired of very short wheel base cars in that respect and out of all the cars I am testing the TT-RS has the shortest. I really want a car that I can go on some long weekend road trips in with my wife and not feel exhausted when I climb out of the car but yet still be excited to get into on a daily basis. The LC500 would be awesome for that but less good at the twisty bits around here that I drive on a daily basis because of the extra mass. I have no qualms about the powerplant in the LC500 as I am more concerned about character than outright numbers and that motor has character. Coming from an MX-5, both the F Type and the LC500 felt like rocketships so in this case it is all about perspective. Having that much power underfoot everyday would feel like an absolute luxury after a couple of years of having to wind the MX-5 out to 4k rpm just to keep up with traffic!
LC500 engine..... outdated? Sure. But that NA character is what makes it special. They were one of the last.
Fuck. Turbos.
(Except in situations where you just can't get enough power otherwise. Or rally cars.)

Yes, it's a horribly old motor based on the 12 year old 4.6L 1UR-FSE, which was stroked out to the 5.0 2UR-GSE. It makes good overall power, but torque delivery comes on extremely high (4800RPM). For a 4300lb car, that is not the kind of torque output desired in day-to-day conditions. Having dealt with the exact torque output of the BMW M6 and its V10, albeit with 500 fewer pounds...it got a little annoying once you're used to the power delivery and you found yourself constantly revving the car up to 3K or 4K just to keep up with traffic largely made up of Accords, Camrys, and Ford F150s.
That's why supercharged > electric/battery assist >> turbos.

I also had zero problems keeping up with traffic on my test drive. Maybe if someone was coming from a supercharged or turbocharged motor and was used to having gobs of torque on tap then it might feel anemic off the line but for me, who is completely used to low torque (and really likes the character of a good N/A motor) I thought it was great.
It's still early days yet though and I will definitely want more seat time and more test drives in all of the cars that I am interested in before it is all said and done.
Yeah, you can credit the 10-speed for making the motor feel better than it is.
And I agree, reliability will be a non factor for it. It'll outlive virtually everything in the car.

The S85 (and the S65 offspring) are really unique engines.

at 3k RPM, the LC500 is ~100tq higher, or ~40% more torque. Those are *very* different engines.
I am shocked the LC500 motor has such a flat torque curve for an N/A motor. It's not a "tabletop" like most turbo motors but it certainly has a nice, wide, usable powerband. You are basically between 275tq and 350tq to the wheels all the way from 1900 RPM to over 7k RPM.
Grading and tree removal started today at my house. It looks like a disaster area just outside of my kitchen window. And they had to remove a section of the fence at the back of the yard so now the cows are helping themselves to what's left of my yard. Fun times!

Always ready to give you a jolt, but the super linear HP gain makes it worth it to rev it out still.

Apologies as that was probably a rather random comment without any kind of preface. The garage has to be in place before "next car" gets chosen. Today was the official start of construction.
